Arlington Heights Frontier Days Stampede 5K Race Recap

I really enjoy this race and am beginning to run this yearly.  The course is fast, flat and residential.  It's also very organized and recently implemented chip timing, which is even better.  And, I love how some people who live along the race course will turn their sprinklers on so we can run through them.

I finished in 25:06 which was good enough to get 3rd in my age group.  I won this super cool race themed glass.  My time was disastrous, but thankfully, not my worst time ever.  *WHEW*

Mile 1: I really HATE how the 5k and 10k runners start together.  The start is VERY crowded and it's really hard jockeying for position.  Also, we arrived at the race with about 25 minutes to go.  I really didn't get a chance to warm up since I had to pee prior and the lines were somewhat long.  It was so weird since there was a huge line for all the potties.  Usually, each potty has a line of people.  I found that a little weird.

Anyway, I couldn't really get into my usual speed on mile one.  In the past races I've done, I get there in around 7:30 and that's me being "conservative".  Today, I got there in 8:18.  Oh shit!  Way too slow!!  So, I immediately revised my goal to running 9 minute miles as opposed to running sub 8:00s and breaking 25.  I really doubted that breaking 25 would be possible with that slow of a start.

Mile 2: The legs definitely were feeling sore from yesterday's 10 miler.  But, I figured that I could try to make up for lost time.  I tried my best to run with people so I could just drift along with them.  The strategy must have worked since I ran 7:40 for Mile 2.

Mile 2.5 to Mile 3:  The course splits around mile 2.5 and I was so glad that I wasn't running the 10k because I really couldn't deal with that at the moment.  My legs just felt fatigued and I felt fatigued.  My ITB and knee weren't bothering me, but honestly, I was just TIRED.  And, it was starting to get HOT.  And, we all know how much I HATE running in the heat.  Mile 3: 8:07!

Mile 3 to 3.1: We round a corner and I can see the start line in the distance.  For some reason, long straightaways to the finish really just beat me up mentally.  I had no energy whatsoever to sprint it in.  I started to pick it up as the finish line got closer, but I knew that it would not be a sub 25 effort.  I crossed the line a little past 25.  I sighed, shook my head and walked over to the hydration tables to down some water and Gatorade.  Mile 3 to 3.1: 1:01

I definitely am going to move toward the front the next time I run this race.  I lost a lot of time in the beginning jockeying for position and getting stuck behind slow runners.  I think I'd rather try to go a little faster at the beginning to improve on my time.

But hey!  I got a course PR! :)  And, I got 3rd in my age group!  It was so weird because originally, the results showed that I got second, but I checked just now and I was third.  Thankfully, I was third.  Otherwise, I would have to give my glass back!

Great weekend of running and look forward to next week.  I keep saying that I'm not going to race anymore and that my next race is the Chicago Marathon, but who knows what else might pop up along the way.  Besides, I'm just running 5ks so it's not like it's that crazy!

2012 Race Schedule

Here's a glimpse of my 2012 race schedule.  This may change, but for the most part, it's set in stone.  So, I'm running the Chicago Marathon this year and it will be my first.  I'm training with CARA in Libertyville at 6:45am on Saturday mornings starting on June 9th.

With a heavy heart, I decided not to race because I want to focus on marathon training.  I thought maybe I could run a race and then run more miles after, but I know myself too well.  I'm going to want to run a PR at the race and I will run my hardest and probably be too wiped out to run more later.  Plus, racing may throw off my marathon training if I have to go easy on the week of a race.

Here it is:

April 28, 2012: Loop the Lakes 5K in VH (as always):  DONE (an update will follow)

May 28, 2012: Jubilee Jog 5K in Wilmette
- My dad and I were eying another 5k an a 10k that happened around the same time frame, but with the weather being awfully hot, my dad coming off a calf injury and my volunteer work we decided to run this one.  Plus, neither one of us has run in Wilmette.

June 8 through June 9, 2012: Ragnar Relay from Madison, WI to Chicago, IL
- A 200 mile relay race with 11 other women that I have never met before
- 1st relay race ever
- More on this to follow

June 10, 2012: NorthShore Half Marathon 5k
- Was thinking about doing the half, but don't want to risk it and injure myself before marathon training, but didn't want to sit around and do nothing while waiting for my Dad to finish his first half marathon ever (at the age of 65 no less) so I signed up for the 5k and figured that it would be manageable even if I have to run slow
- I will do the half at some point I swear!  This year's medal looks sweet!

October 7, 2012: Chicago Marathon

November 18, 2012: Big Sur Half Marathon (TBD)

Also, I may run a half marathon during my training since it does recommend that I run one - I'm just not sure which one.  Perhaps I will run the Rock and Roll Half Marathon again, but it's very pricey!

2011 Running Season and Race Recap

Hi all,

I meant to try to keep up regularly with my blog posting about my races and my goals to get my half marathon time under two hours comfortably, but I sort of fell off the face of the planet with that.  Maybe it's because I've seen SO MANY blogs about running out there.  What's going to make mine any different than all the rest?  I'm just your average runner.

But anyway, the 2012 season is just beginning for me so I'm going to give this thing a go and see how much I can blog about.

It'll be good for me to have a place to save my information about my races anyway.

So, here's 2011's races and results for you:

Race 1: Loop the Lakes 5K in VH: 23:03 (1st in age group, 2nd woman overall)
- I always do this one because it's in my hometown and is literally a mile away from home.  This race means a lot to me since it got me back into racing after I posted a 22:46 (my PR) in 2010 and won the women's race.  And, I can usually win my age group and score some sweet prizes so that's nice.  Hey, I don't cherry pick on purpose, but this gives me confidence going into the racing season.
- I felt good about this especially since I was out of running from October 2010 to February 2011 with a knee injury and a blood clot - see more on that in the above post.

Race 2: NorthShore Half Marathon 5K: 23:01 (3rd/65 AG, 73/795 OA and 16/482 W)
- I'm beginning to always do this one.
- The weather for June was awesome - nice and cool and in the 60s!
- I stuck with the 5k despite really wanting to run the half. I hadn't been able to train as much w/ the injury so I felt like the half would be a safer choice.
- I achieved a course PR which is good because there is a killer hill after mile 1 on this.

Race 3: Frontier Days 10K in Arlington Heights: 49:33 (PR) (7/32 AG, 38/233 sex, 151/545 OA)
- I ran this race with Jared who was my running buddy before he moved to Michigan.  He helped get me motivated especially coming off my injury.
- I ran with my iPod for the first time at this race.
- I went WAY too fast in the first mile (7:01 I believe), but still got a PR by a lot (52:40 in 2010)
- Fun Fact: it always seems to be hot, which makes sense since this is run in July.
- Fun Fact: Met the woman who writes the blog that I follow at this race.
- Fun Fact: My old mortgage loan officer runs this race every year.  He's in this 50s and throws down a 5K in the low 20s.  Talk about bad ass.

Race 4: Alexian Brothers Half Marathon: 1:57:25
- The 2 hour time goal was broken.
- Like the year before, it was rainy (thunderstorms), but that helped me run faster.
- I saw the woman at this race and beat her because she was having a bad race. :(

Race 5: Rock and Roll Half Marathon: 1:53:32 (PR)
- This was my first race in Chicago.
- It was awesome and part of it is run on the same course at the Chicago Marathon.
- See more on blog post on old site.

Race 6: Buffalo Grove Stampede 10K: 51:16 (BOO)
- Course PR by 2 seconds at least
- Hard course: part residential and part trial
- Good post-race party - all you can eat pancake breakfast

Race 7: Chicago Half Marathon: 1:59:04
- Almost did not break 2 hours.
- Course was super hot and it was boring (think: LSD - NO SHADE WHATSOEVER).
- Ran it on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 which was awesome, but I will probably not be running this one again.

Race 8: Highland Park Fun(d) Run 10K: 50:21
- At least I dropped my 10k time from the DISASTER in BG.
- Got to run along the Ravinia Trial - super cool and will be running here again on my last leg in the Ragnar Relay
- Got beat in the sprint by a guy w/ a belly.
- BF goes, "Wow, that guy ran it?!" when he saw the guy.  I gave him the dirtiest look and I said, "Yep and he beat me."

Race 9: VHHS 5K: 22:47.3 --> almost a PR
- Went back to my high school and got to finish up on the track (nostalgia at its finest) and saw my younger sister's swim coach since he was one of the timers
- Was on my way to becoming the 1st woman overall, but got passed up toward the end by a girl who is not even in high school :(
- Was super excited about almost getting a PR, but was told by another racer that the course was short by .1, which bummed me out a bit

Race 10: BIG SUR HALF MARATHON ON MONTEREY BAY, CALIFORNIA: 1:53:51 (almost a PR)
- THE BEST RACE EVER.  You run along the ocean, which is super cool in and of itself.  There are no clocks along the way which actually was good for me since I wasn't freaking out about my mile times, etc.  You get soup and beer at the end.  And, this was my very first destination race.
- My family lives in Salinas, which is about an hour away from the course so I stayed there for a week and got to hang out w/ my family before and after the race
- My aunt, her husband and my two twin cousins volunteer at Mile 5 (and 10) which is a Lovers Point and I got to see her both times. :)
- I'm planning on going back this year if I can.  It's 6 weeks after the Chicago Marathon and I think I should be in shape to run it.

Introduction to Me and Why I Run

Back in grade school, I definitely WAS NOT a runner. In fact, I hated it. Remember "Mile Run Day" in school? I dreaded those and basically was crying for my mom after the first 200 meters. A friend and I cheated one year (we held up 4 fingers to signify that we were done despite having 1 more lap to go) and still got a 9:30 something. I felt super guilty (of course), but there was really no way in hell I was going out there for ANOTHER lap.

I joined track on a whim in 8th grade - I really have NO IDEA what motivated me to do this. But, I vaguely remember running with the team (dying and being at the very back of the pack of course) and skipping out on meets because I was too scared to participate. I didn't want to show up, get dead last and get the customary clap (for the slow ones) and such.
So, I avoided meets. Toward the end of the season, my coach noticed me going over the hurdles and though I had some possible skill/potential to be a decent hurdler. He told me join the track team in high school and compete in the hurdles. So, I did.

I ran track all four years in high school and was a hurdler (100 meters and 300 meters) and also ran the 800, 4X800 relay, 1 mile and 2 mile. I mostly did hurdles and 4X800 relay. For some reason, my coaches thought I'd like running the 1 and 2 mile races because I did cross country from sophomore year to senior year. Little did they know!

Oh, and why did I run cross country? Well, for a stupid, silly reason really. This boy I liked was going to do it and he knew that I had been running that summer (probably a mile daily) and encouraged me to do it. A girlfriend of mine said she'd run too so I was like, "OK." It was either run cross country or swim and I didn't want to get wet. So, cross country it was. The funny thing was that she never actually ran cross country and he didn't run it until junior year. So yep, I followed through and did it.

Anyway, my track and cross country season could be summed up with this: "fell short of potential". As far as the running itself, I liked it. I mean, why would I have continued to show up year after year if I didn't?? I just didn't like being pushed passed what I thought my body's limits were (aka - I didn't really want to get better). I liked the physical and health benefits. Also, I enjoyed the social aspect of being on the team. I mean, wh doesn't like hanging out with a bunch of cool girls and going to PASTA PARTIES?

However, mentally, I was a mess. In cross country, if I'd get passed, I'd get demoralized and instead of try to catch up, I just let myself fall further and further behind. As for track, it was the same. My issue with the 800 was that I would blast it out the gate for the first 600 and suffer in the last 200 (and get passed by tons of girls) because I had no gas left in the tank.

But, I'm not a quitter. I'll stick it out. It's what I did in high school. I didn't really like band (was proudly a third chair clarinet my senior year), hated French and yearned to take psychology or sociology instead, but took AP French anyway, which was a waste since I didn't even get college credit for it. I powered through and stuck it out with cross country and track as well.

COLLEGE RUNNING:
In college, I was really good about working out for the first 3 years or so of college. I would run on the treadmill at the gym pretty much daily or every other day. I also ran with the running club (again because a boy I liked ran with them as well) during my freshman year of school. I didn't do any races since I was way too scared from running meets in cross country to consider running a 5K or anything like that. Again, I ran more to keep my weight down and stay in shape.

POST COLLEGE:
I didn't really start getting back into running until July 2009. I'd start up and I'd be really good about it for a while, but then I'd fade, burn out and stop it for a while. I never had the motivation to train in the winter. I'd never run outside and most certainly, did not have a gym membership. I ran when I felt like it and stopped when I didn't. I didn't really have any running goals in mind either - I'd do a few miles here and there - going no more than 5, but slowly pushing myself to 7, but no more than that.

But, finally, in July 2009, I made a committment to running and have been running consistenly ever since (save for a freak health thing - more on that shortly). From June 2007 to January 2010, I worked in a bad job. I hated it with ever ounce of my being. I hated going to work, I didn't respect my managers, I didn't like my company's philosopy and core values and I hated catering to the customers. It got to the point where I was angry with everyone in my life and taking out my work stress on them. I started having serious road rages issues and even got into an accident in part because I was speeding trying to get to work on time. I started seeing someone to talk about my issues. I told her that I was thinking about getting back into running and she encouraged it.

I really had to work hard to build up my stamina and strength, but eventually, I was able to get back into it. I'd run 5 miles daily as a way to burn off the stress from work and take my anger out on the run instead of on my friends and family. I even ran thoughout the whole entire winter!! Running was my savior and my stress relief and I was truly glad to have found my way back to it and was beginning to really love it.

RACING:
My dad convinced me to sign up for our town's local 5k, which is held in April. I was really debating on it and wasn't sure. You know... my fear of races, being last, etc. etc. But, I decided to give it a shot and go for it. I'd be happy wtih a sub 8 minute mile and was hoping to just run under 24. I shocked the hell out of myself and ran a 22:46 (my current PR) and finishing as the 1st woman. I got a medal and a pretty trophy for my efforts. In May, I did another local 5K and also was the top woman to finish with a 24:24 (it was hotter than hell that day). And so yep... that started races.

2010:
In 2010, I ran 8 total races - 3 5Ks, 4 10Ks and 1 half marathon. I had a few more planned, but then got INJURED in October. I had some knee/ITB pain, whcih was one thing, but then in November, I was diagnosed with a blood clot (!) in my right calf. I had to take 4 months off running, which really bummed me out. I had to go to PT and slowly build everything back up again.

2011:
So far in 2011, I've run 2 5Ks, 2 10Ks and 2 half marathons. This year, I've hit some time goals, which were to run a 10K sub 50 minutes (49:33!) and break 2 hours in the half (1:53:32 and 1:57:25). Surprisingly, in 2011, I've run faster. My 2 10K times were better than my times last year. My half time has been dropped significantly from my disappointing 2:05:10 in October 2010. I've got 6 more races planned for the season (2 5Ks, 2 10Ks, and 2 half marathons). I'm closing out the season with a trip to Big Sur, California to run a half marathon. My family lives in Salinas, which is super close by and I am going to spend Thanksgiving with them. I'm super excited about it.

GOALS/BUCKET LIST:

TIME GOALS:
5K: PR, but I wouldn't say that I'm a 5K runner so simply running sub 8 minute miles would suffice for this.
10k: To consistently run sub 50, which would be sub 8 minute miles.
Half: Sub 1:50:59, which is doable since I'm at a 1:53:32 already. I can hit that with a ltitle bit more work.

RACE GOALS:

CHICAGO MARATHON 2012. GO BIG OR GO HOME.
